Oxford is the “wokest” dictionary.
Four times a year the Oxford Dictionary update their word catalog with modern definitions. Several major black news sites discovered that Oxford extended the definition of “woke” online and in print, according to HuffPost Black Voices.
Even though the term “woke” is past tense for “wake,” black millennials modify the word to correlate with pop culture and social and political awareness.
“The original meaning of adjectival woke (and earlier woke up) was simply ‘awake’, but by the mid-20th century, woke had been extended figuratively to refer to being ‘aware’ or ‘well informed’ in a political or cultural sense,” Oxford explains.
The online definition reads: “alert to injustice in society, especially racism.” The dictionary explains that non-black people struggle with not understanding the language of black culture, so Oxford provided context for the general public.
